Digital Pens: Advantages and Disadvantages

Digital pens are becoming more popular especially for college students and journalist. Writing with the digital pen on special dot paper allows the pen to directly capture the notes, and from there they can be downloaded directly onto the computer. Advantages and disadvantages are listed below. Please comment based on your experience with digital pens.

Advantages of digital pens:
  • Converts handwritten notes into digital text
  • Keeps things organized and allows for a back up file of notes and audio
  • Records people speaking and plays it back
  • Can download apps onto the pen - Such as helping people speak different languages, play games, make music, and help define a definition of a word (Moynihan, 2009). 
Disadvantages of digital pens:
  • Privacy
  • Does not always download handwritten notes perfectly
  • Cost (Beckett, 2006).

    I use my Anoto Pen for taking notes in my college courses. It makes scanning them to my laptop so easy! It's very helpful.
